Books To Read This Summer

Ah, yes. Summer. The season of being either burned alive or melted into a puddle of sad goop.

This Is Fine GIF

But you know what that means? It means you’ll be moving a lot less to stop you from overheating. Which means you can READ! Or at least try to, I fear that our not moving would give our TBR’s the perfect time to strike, so reading a little more should ease its rage a little?? Maybe?? Hopefully??

Even though we all cry about the monstrous and terrifying sizes of our TBR’s, we all go on the hunt for new releases to get excited about, and we all click on recommendations posts when they pop up… and we’re lying to ourselves if we say we don’t walk away with at least one new book on our list of “books to buy as soon as possible.”

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE, ISN’T IT???

GIF by NETFLIX

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl, in which readers and book bloggers come together to scream about all things bookish!

Today’s Topic is “Books that Give Off Summer Vibes (or Winter if you live in the southern hemisphere).”

And so, here today, I’m going to recommend some of my favourite books and books that I enjoyed! I’m going to recommend them by Genre, otherwise this whole post would just be me screaming about how amazing Fantasy books are. 😂

By recommending books by genre, hopefully you’ll find books that are new to you but also suit your reading tastes! I will say though, that the majority of these books are Young Adult, since YA is what I usually read, but there are a few recommendations that might be better suited for mature readers. Some are YA books but have sex-positive scenes, and a few are just… not YA. I’ll label which ones, so you know what’s what!

Without further ado, ON WITH THE LIST AND ANGER YOUR TBR’S WITH THESE IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!

Clicking on the book covers will take you to that books Goodreads page! So you can make that “adding to the tbr and making it angry” thing more official. You’re welcome!

Contemporary

As the weather warms, so does the heart. A fluffy, heart warming read (with as little sobbing as possible…. though I don’t promise that these won’t leave you clutching at your heart in agony) is just what we need sometimes!

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

30724132

Synopsis:

Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale.

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

But when Eliza’s secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she’s built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.

Every enchantment has a price.

With a flick of her paintbrush, Isobel creates stunning portraits for a dangerous set of clients: the fair folk. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes, a weakness that could cost him his throne, and even his life.

Furious, Rook spirits Isobel away to his kingdom to stand trial for her crime. But something is seriously amiss in his world, and they are attacked from every side. With Isobel and Rook depending upon each other for survival, their alliance blossoms into trust, perhaps even love . . . a forbidden emotion that would violate the fair folks’ ruthless laws, rendering both their lives forfeit. What force could Isobel’s paintings conjure that is powerful enough to defy the ancient malice of the fairy courts?

Isobel and Rook journey along a knife-edge in a lush world where beauty masks corruption and the cost of survival might be more frightening than death itself.

Sci – Fi

Speaking of eternal darkness! OUTTA SPACE IS BOUND TO BE COLD! Nothing more cooling than floating around in pitch black, though hopefully without the fear of running out of oxygen. No need to worry about melting up there… unless you float to close to a star… that would get a little toasty.

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Cinder is considered a technological mistake by most of society and a burden by her stepmother. This reputation brings Prince Kai himself to her weekly market booth, needing her to repair a broken android before the annual ball. He jokingly calls it “a matter of national security,” but Cinder suspects it’s more serious than he’s letting on.

Although eager to impress the prince, Cinder’s intentions are derailed when her younger stepsister, and only human friend, is infected with the fatal plague that’s been devastating Earth for a decade. Blaming Cinder for her daughter’s illness, Cinder’s stepmother volunteers her body for plague research, an “honor” that no one has survived.

But it doesn’t take long for the scientists to discover something unusual about their new guinea pig. Something others would kill for.

Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

But when he arrives in a Midwest town marked for death, he encounters Essie, a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from debilitating delusions and hallucinations. His bees want to sting her on sight. But Essie doesn’t see a monster when she looks at Dresden.

Essie is fascinated and delighted by his changing features. Risking his own life, he holds back his bees and spares her. What starts out as a simple act of mercy ends up unravelling Dresden’s solitary life and Essie’s tormented one. Their impossible romance might even be powerful enough to unravel a centuries-old curse.

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. 1. Several of these are autumn reads for me, but that’s mostly because I read them for the first time in that season. 😉 The Raven Boys, Clockwork Angel, and Cinder. But I love them all so much, I could read them any time of the year. 🙂
